“Sherman’s march to the Sea” We are eating our way to the sea

Savannah is a very interesting town.  We took a hop-on hop- off bus tour. Along the route were movie locations for “Forest Gump”.  The church and the park (without the iconic bench).

The first girl scout headquarters started in Savannah.Savannah has 22 squares (small parks) The largest is Forsyth and is 30 acres. This fountain was very nice.Beautiful Live Oak trees  line many walk ways in the town. Spanish moss was hanging from the branches. Live oaks never loose their leaves. (huh)

 Catholic church .The cemetery was right next to the church.  Here we go again . . . time to eat.  We ate at the famous “Pink House” Wow, delicious.At the Savannah Cotton Exchange buyers would stand on these walkways and bid on bundles of cotton below to be shipped to England. And we found birds, something we haven’t be able to find very often in Georgia. We didn’t ride on this river boat, but it look fun as we walked up and down River St.Savannah Candy Co.  I wished we weren’t so full.Beautiful Fall decorations all over the town,  “The Waving Girl”  statue in on the banks of the river. Her story is,  she would wave a handkerchief every morning and every evening as ships would leave or return from the port of Savannah.  This is the bridge that goes to Elba Island on the other side of the Savannah River. Travel Day to Savannah, Via Juliette, GA

We left Atlanta, GA and went to Jonesboro, GA.   Lots of Civil war history as General Sherman started his infamous “march to the sea” We are standing by the train station.  General Sherman was cutting off all supplies to the Confederate Army.  A very important battle was Jonesboro.  The soldiers of the Union army would heat up the R. R. tracks and take the hot tracks and wrap them around a tree.  This was know as “Sherman’s bow tie”  the tracks could not be used, they were completely destroyed.  Margaret Michelle lived in Jonesboro and a young girl, and many of her experiences growing up she included in her novel “Gone with the Wind”  We worked up a vacation appetite so we traveled to Juliette, GA to the “Whistle Stop Cafe “ for fried green tomatoes.  This cafe was made famous by the movie Fried Green Tomatoes”back in the car we noticed a vacant textile warehouse. The textile industry left the area    The whole town of Juliette, GA was like a ghost town with a few residents still there.On down the road we saw in the distance a working nuclear plant

  We made it to Savannah, GA just in time to have dinner at Paula Deen’s restaurant “Lady and Sons”  Y’ALL

Hunger Games and Gone with the Wind Day 3

Atlanta’s, Swan house was the setting for the movie “The Hunger Games”  The area was full of estates and mansions.  The Inman family built the home/mansion in 1928.  He died three years later and Emily lived in the house until her death in 1965.In the same area was a working farm called “Tullie’s Smith Farm”   The garden had peanuts and cotton plants.  The woman in the garden was digging sweet potatoes and introduced us to plants we don’t and can’t grow in Vancouver.We couldn’t leave the Swan House without taking a picture of their car.I think I fit right at home in this grand Estate.We worked up an appetite and stopped in a cute Southern Carriage House Restaurant.  Verne felt a little out numbered.  Lots of women.  Soup and tea sandwiches.  Notice the roses.  Nice touch.On to Margaret Michell’s house where she wrote the book, “Gone with the Wind” The day was perfect til a huge rain storm.  We hurried to take a picture  before we got socked.  Up in the 3rd floor we had to take the opportunity for a photo op being Rhette Butler and Scarlette O’Hara.We ended the night at “Fox Brother’s Bar-B-Q. Atlanta Day 2

Woke up in Greenville, SC and droveto Atlanta, GA .  Excited to see the Atlanta temple . . . That’s right, it was closed for the 2 week cleaning.   We took a beautiful walk around the grounds and headed into town to see “The World of Coka Cola. Fun tour and lots of memorabilia from around the world.Verne really wanted to take a picture with the Coka Cola  polar bear.  He was the marketing face for COKE starting in 1993.  We went into the vault where the secret recipe is kept and read about the history of the drink, that started in 1888 by a pharmacist named Pemberton.Coke machines through time.A whole room filled with sodas from around the world.  All made by the COKE Co. Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and North America.      SAMPLES ,SAMPLES, SAMPLES.  A walk to Atlanta’ Olympic Park. Then out to dinner at “South City Kitchen”  We enjoyed southern cuisine fried green tomatoes and collard greens.  Verne had a yummy soup, with Shrimp, ham, and gritts.  We thought we should start talking with a southern accent.  Great day.
